The Union Government on Wednesday granted approval for procuring 1,50,000 units of the ‘Oxycare’ system which has been advanced by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The units will be obtained at the estimated cost of ₹322.5 crore with the funds to be given from the PM-CARES fund for helping the Covid-19 patients with the required medical assistance.
Post the approval, the Centre will obtain 1,00,000 manual along with 50,000 automatic ‘Oxycare’ systems having non-rebreather masks.
‘Oxycare’ is a SpO2 facilitated oxygen supply system which will regulate the oxygen which is administered for the patients as per reviewed SpO2 levels, which curbs the patient from experiencing fatal state of hypoxia. The system was inherently curated for soldiers deployed at extreme high-altitude areas. The indigenously advanced system is efficient, smooth functioning and adequately works in the treatment of the Covid-19 patients.
THe DRDO system comprises of two variants, where the elementary version is having a 10 litre oxygen cylinder, pressure regulator cum flow controller, a humidifier along with a nasal cannula, while the second one includes electronic controls automatically regulating the movement of oxygen via a low-pressure regulator and a SpO2 probe.
The DRDO has further planned to establish seven medical oxygen plants in the state of Odisha at Boudh, Cuttack, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Bhadrak, Koraput and Nayagarh districts, according to CGM of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) of Odisha, Ram Prasad Panda. He further added that the civil and electrical works of the plants managed by NHAI and DRDO will consider the technical aspect.
This move by DRDO constitutes a massive drive in which it has taken the call to curate 500 medical oxygen plants in the country in a span of three months with the aid of its indegenous developed technology. After the completion, every plant will be producing 1,000 litres per minute of oxygen and will be supplied via pipelines to the hospitals.
