Parliament Committee to draft a report presenting atrocities and crimes against women

The subject of atrocities and crimes against women will be the main issue to be discussed by the parliamentary standing committee on home affairs scheduled on November 18, and directed Union Home Ministry Home officials to have a word on the issue prior to formulation of the report.

The issue is being highlighted due to the outrage displayed by the country over the 19-year old Dalit woman’s alleged rape and murder that happened in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. The parents of the girl blamed the police officials for her cremation without the parents’ consent.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has filed a case against the chief accused, Sandip Singh, who along with three other accused hailing from ‘upper castes’, is in police custody.

As per the officials, the committee will have an interaction with a lot of women groups and legal experts before presenting the final report. The panel may urge for more stringent measures to deal with the issues.

Earlier, the standing committee had raised the issue of “Rising Crime in Delhi and NCR” with the focal point revolving around the crime incidents against women and burglary in the national capital.

From the historic 2012 Delhi rape case, the penalty for the rape accused was pushed towards death penalty with imposing tougher laws against the sexual violence. However, that has not put an end to the crimes against women.

As per the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2019 on a daily average, 88 rape cases were recorded. And, these are reported ones, in contrast, to a higher number of unreported cases, according to experts, due to the social stigma and conflicts on woman’s morality.

Under Congress leader Anand Sharma, who is heading the home ministry panel, other issues such as national security, intelligence coordination and counter terrorism, training of the police force, modernization and reforms, prison conditions and infrastructure, and the activities pertaining to development of Jammu and Kashmir and the management of Covid-19 pandemic will also be discussed.
