Bannerghatta Park marked as high alert on bird flu

With the bird flu outbreak rising in the country, the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) has initiated bio-security measures throughout the zoo and safari areas. Being a shelter for 378 birds representing 45 species, BBP is all set to battle any potentia infection of Avian Influenza (H5N1).

An official statement from BBP said, “Our objective is to remain alert and vigilant for any symptoms among the captive birds at BBP and nearby areas and strengthen the preparedness to face all adversaries. Bio-security measures concerning Avian Influenza, as per the generic guidelines issued by MoEF&CC, have been put in place.”

The animal keepers have been issued a series of guidelines as protective measures to wear rubber gloves and protective clothing, and also issued protective eyewear or a face shield while handling animals. The practice of consecutive cleaning of the animal or bird enclosures with anti-septic solutions and along with maintaining adequate dryness by using anti-viral spray and lime powder.

There has been visitor restriction for the aviary or bird enclosures and the anti-septic foot dips are being given on the entry and exit gates.

The Keepers are suggested to observe for symptoms of tremors, diarrhoea, head tilt, and paralysis happening in birds and animals and the same has to be updated to the  vet officials and also issued directions to collect random faecal samples with the help of IAH&VB for detecting the screening of the Avian Influenza virus.
