BBMP to seek help from BESCOM for collecting user fee

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has an ardent task regarding the collection of user fee when the user model is implemented. BBMP special commissioner in-charge of Solid Waste Management, Randeep Dev revealed that BBMP will be taking the help and support of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) for collection of user fee on a monthly basis.

BESCOM staff visits every households monthly for handing over the electricity bill, will also be giving the bill for waste disposal services. If any resident does not pay the fee, BESCOM will report the same to BBMP, and BBMP will take the neccesary actions, says Randeep.

He iterated the fee is a charge for the collection of waste from their houses, much like the water and electricity charges. Though Randeep explained, the slabs will vary according to households bifurcated on income groups. He said, “We are also saying that in case you compost your waste, there will be some kind of rebate in the fee.”

The BBMP estimates Rs. 175 crore as annual collection from solid waste management cess taken via property tax. As much as 900 crore has been sanctioned by the state over a period of three years indicating the expenditure for infrastructure. The BBMP gets no support from the Centre with respect to the points of operations and maintenance, where BBMP needs to generate own funds. Randeep says, the fee will be a support for the expenditure incurred and empower BBMP to provide better services to the public.
