BS Yediyurappa: Selfish people behind farmer protests

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa used the word ‘selfish’ for those who are protesting against the contentious farm laws on Friday and stated that around 99 per cent of the farmers supported the reforms.

While addressing the event organized for farmers on the birth anniversary of ex-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Yediyurappa promised about having a minimum support price (MSPs) for crops in the state, iterating that government wants the welfare of the farmers.

Yediyurappa said by amending the laws, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given an opportunity to the farmers to sell their produce in their desired place. Yediyurappa said, “They can trade inside or outside an APMC, in any part of the state or country. PM Modi has provided this opportunity to farmers. However, some selfish people are protesting the legislations. But, 99 out of 100 farmers have welcomed the laws.”

He further added, “I assure you that the Karnataka government will wipe the tears of farmers. It will provide MSP for crops to ensure a life of dignity for farmers.”

He further congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Kissan Samman Yojna on the 96th birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He said, “Government benefits are being transferred directly to farmer accounts and the scheme has curbed the menace of middlemen in providing benefits.”

Cooperation Minister S T Somashekhar revealed that he along with Agriculture Minister BC Patil will be traveling to various districts of the state of Karnataka in January to explain the farmers about the benefits of laws.
