Covid-19 cases in Bengaluru surge high in last five days

The Covid-19 cases in Bengaluru have distinctly increased over the past five days, however, the officials have discarded this as the commencement of the second wave of Covid-19 in the city of the state of Karnataka.

As per the data, the count of cases have fallen as compared to the records of the previous month. The cases in the city have seen a linear rise over the last twenty days in contrast to January, when the daily average was estimated to be around 52 per cent. This gives a clear indication that January recorded overall 19,891 cases, which gives a daily count of 641 with 338 cases in Bengaluru.

When comparing with twenty days of February, a count of 8,349 cases, from which 231 cases were recorded daily in Bengaluru.

From February 16, there has been a dramatic rise to 70 per cent from the the usual 54 %. So, the daily share of rise in the cases has been up to 62 per cent, which was around the same, like the beginning of the pandemic in March and in July.

Dr Giridhar Babu, Epidemiologist iterated the situation is too early to give a specification about the present scenario inching towards a second wave. He said, “Bengaluru is the first place to be hit, but the data shows that so far, there are only a blip of two clusters, but the growth rate is not changing. In fact, the growth rate is decreasing week to week. In fact, the growth rate is about 7% to 8% from now for the entire state.”

Dr Babu further said, “This is a positive development because earlier it used to be 13% to 18%.”

BBMP’s take on the rise in cases

BBMP Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad said the daily cases in the city have been falling, but not clear about how the share is increasing. He said, “Certainly, there are rampant social-distancing violations in the city. We are scaling up surveillance because of the threat posed by the spike in the neighboring states.”

Epidemiologist Dr Babu iterated that one of the reason why the share was elevating is due to the inadequate operations adhering to the surveillance machinery in the city. He said, “This is how the three clusters were found. Testing of those initially positive led to the discovery of more cases.”
