The Bangalore University has busted a major evaluation scam, with the investigative team lodging a complaint against the private firm deployed for scanning the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) Answer scripts for supposedly manipulating the marks of 804 students.
With the complaint filed at the Jnanabharati Police Station, the Registrar also suspects involvement of the university staff in the malpractice. The Registrar, K Jyothi has urged for an internal investigation against the firm in the FIR. The company was given the tender for scanning the OMR scripts and uploading the marks obtained regarding the results of the UG and PG courses declared from November – December 2018, till present.
The FIR read, “Marks allotted to 804 students have been tampered with and changed after evaluation by the evaluators. Further, the results of the same had been provided through an email and CD to the colleges concerned.”
Regarding the lodged compliant, Jyothi revealed to Media, “The Registrar (evaluation) had brought this to our notice. After internal verification with the examination section, we learnt about the tampering of marks. After discussing the issue with the vice chancellor, we have filed a police complaint.”
Besides the police investigation, the university will also have an internal probe, Jyothi added. The university further anticipates the involvement of students, colleges and middlemen in the scam. The BU’s syndicate, which will have a meeting on Tuesday, to have an intricate discussion about the scam and the punishment to be given to the offenders. Members of syndicate revealed to Media about their demands to have a CBI inquiry into the scam and also looking for previous records from 2014 regarding the malpractices. One of the senior members of syndicate said, “We even demanded the withdrawal of results of all those students until the enquiry is completed.”
