The protesting farmers in New Delhi are supposedly going to have a meeting with the police force on Thursday regarding their proposed tractor rally on Republic Day. The farmer leaders and the police officials are having a second meeting in two days over the issue.
The first meeting held on Wednesday was between the farmers and the police officials from the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi to take a call about the route and arrangements for the tractor rally scheduled on Republic Day. The police force gave the recommendation of an alternative route which was declined by the farmers.
The route suggested for rally was Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) expressway, however the farmers did not agree on it, as reported by the news agency PTI. The farmers are suggesting the Outer Ring Road which passes through various regions of New Delhi like Vikaspuri, Janakpuri, Uttam Nagar, Burari Peeragrahi and Pritampura. The farmer unions are saying they should be allowed for the ‘peaceful march’ rather than making an attempt to stop it.
Both the police and the Centre are opposing the rally, citing it might disturb the masses and the Republic Day celebrations. The Centre also filed a petition via Delhi Police Force seeking a ban on the protest, which was turned down by the Supreme Court stating the police officials can deal with the tractor rally issues. Farmers from several parts of the country have been protesting against the three farm laws passed by the Centre – Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020
