Hundreds of people protest against the farm laws in the streets of Bengaluru

Hundreds of people representing the farmers, Dalit and Labour organizations were crowding before Town Hall in Bengaluru, as a move to support the Bharat Bandh called on Tuesday by the farmers’ leaders and associations to urge Centre to repeal the three key farm laws passed.

Several farmers were a part of the ongoing protest in Bengaluru, marching along with their produce and whilst shouting various slogans against the Centre with the demand to revoke the bills passed.

Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, the President of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, are appealing a roll back of the new approved farm bills. He said, “This government came to power because of farmers. These three farm acts were brought in not to benefit the farmers but to benefit multinational companies and middle men. The government brought in this legislation not to help farmers but to make it easier for the businessmen. What was the need to bring in such laws without consulting farmers? If these laws are not rolled back, farmers across the country will give the Prime Minister and his party men the right answer in the next election.”

The farmers and trade unions were protesting in front of the Town Hall and were provided a strong support by members from Dalit support group, Dalit Tigers, who were protesting near Town Hall by beating drums and waving blue flags. The protests were also carried by the street vendors from Jayanagar. The protesters were also backed up by Indian Youth Congress.

Considering the normal functioning of the city, Bharat Bandh called by farmers was partial. The transport was operational with Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses moving around in the city. Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa was urging to tone down the impact of shutdown in the city. He said, “No one is supporting the Bharath Bandh called by the farmers today. You all have seen how the response is in the state and Bengaluru City. Instead of calling protest unnecessarily, they should know the ground reality.”

Alongside, protests are being held by thousands of farmers in the national capital of the country and have arrived there from different parts of the country to protest against the contentious farm laws and are demanding to revoke them from the Centre.
