Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the inauguration of Governor’s Conference based on the National Education Policy (NEP) on Monday morning via a video conference. The conference was organized by the Ministry of Education titled, “Role of NEP – 2020 in Transforming Higher Education”.

While addressing the conference, PM spoke that education policy and education system are important means of fulfilling the aspirations of the country. He also mentioned that, “..It is also true that the government, its interference in education policy, its impact, should be minimal. As foreign policy, defence policy are of the country, not government, so is education policy. It belongs to everyone.” Modi stressed on the features of NEP 2020, stating that the pressure on students for taking specific streams have been removed, focuses on “learning instead of studying” and is based on “critical thinking rather than curriculum” with a special focus on

“passion, practicality, and performance.”

“It is our collective responsibility that the policy is implemented in letter and spirit. The more teachers, parents, students are associated with education policy, the more relevant and broadbased it will be,” the PM added.

While speaking further prospects of NEP in the country, Modi stated, “We are working to make India a knowledge economy. To tackle brain drain, the NEP has paved the way for opening campuses of best international institutions in the country to bring them within reach of youth from simple families.” NEP 2020 will be replacing the 34-year-old National Policy on Education formulated in 1986 and aims at paving transformational reforms in education systems to make India a global knowledge superpower.
