42 trees to be chopped off to make way for Jyothipuram metro station

The authorities have proposed for a transit hub for Jyothipuram metro station, where bus bays and access roads in separate directions being encompassed at the planning stage to enhance the connectivity factor. Though, as many as 42 trees at Benniganahalli will be chopped off for making way for the proposed infrastructure.

Apart from being the connectivity point for the Outer Ring Road metro line (Phase 2A) and the line to Kempegowda International Airport (Phase 2B), the Jyothipuram metro station will be a common point for people to switch from the Line for Kengeri and Whitefield in Phase 2.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has given a proposal for Road widening works, and individual bus bays for vehicles towards Hoskote and Outer Ring Road.

B L Yashwanth Chavan, Chief Public Relations Officer, BMRCL said, “We are planning the station based on the model of a multi-modal transit hub, right from the exit/entry of the metro station… The entire space in the area is being utilised for the integration of various transit points.”

The BMRCL has asked for the permit to chopped off 42 trees from the total of 47 trees at Vijinapura and Benniganahalli which will be infringing the metro and the bus bays construction works.

The BMRCL has presented all the details pertaining to the 47 trees where only 5 can be saved from chopping to the Palike.

Amid the letter seeking permit for clearing the trees, BMRCL officials revealed that the 47 trees were not a part of the original tree felling plan adhering to Baiyappanahalli-Whitefield citing ‘non-acquisition of land and pending finalisation of the detailed plan’ of the area.

The letter stated, “It is requested to grant permission to remove the trees as the works of the metro rail project in this reach are affected.”
