Private hospitals in the country will no longer be able to obtain the Covid-19 vaccines directly from the manufacturing companies and will have to place their requirements on the government’s CoWIN platform, according to sources familiar with the update.

A senior Union Health Ministry official said, “Yes, they will need to procure through Co-WIN; it is being made a simple and transparent process.” CoWIN is the backbone for the national vaccination drive management system.

The new process to obtain vaccines will be operational starting from July 1. There will be a shot on CoWIN for private hospitals to register as private Covid-19 vaccination centers to be able to avail the facility.

The approval will be given on CoWIN itself and the payment for the vaccines obtained needs to be done electronically via the National Health Authority Portal (NHA), following which the order will be confirmed and processed.

Presently, the Centre is obtaining 75% of the vaccine supplies to be distributed under the free supply scheme, and the remnants, 25%, will be taken up by the private hospitals throughout the country as per the doses allocated in advance.
