Bengaluru Urban vaccinates half of the adult population, only district in Karnataka: Sudhakar

Bengaluru Urban, covered in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), is the exclusive district in the state of Karnataka which has administered 50 or more doses for every 100 people, as per the data given by Health and Medical Education Officer Dr. K Sudhakar.

Sudhakar tweeted on Wednesday that the top five districts include Bengaluru Urban, Kodagu, Kolar, Ramanagar, and Udupi where the most number of doses are given for every 100 people.

As of June 21, Bengaluru Urban having an adult population of 77,86,403 has vaccinated 53,14,049 doses, which accounts for 68.25 doses for every 100 people, according to the details given by Sudhakar. Bengaluru Urban consists of 5 taluks – Bengaluru South, North, East, North Additional (Yelahanka), and Aneka and BBMP is only a part of Bengaluru Urban.

According to the data shared by CoWIN dashboard, on Wednesday till 7:50 pm, 3,68,360 individuals were vaccinated. The BBMP has administered vaccines to 54,609 people, and in other areas of Bengaluru Urban 19,460, Dakshina Kannada 29,096, Mysuru 27,883, Belagavi 27,048 and Tumakuru 21,575.

D Randeep, Special Commissioner, Health, BBMP revealed that for all the practical objectives, Bengaluru Urban was equivalent to BBMP. The BBMP has 141 primary health centres (PHCs), various other part of the districts have only 21 PHCs. He explained, “Our (BBMP’s) static sites and workplace vaccination sites are higher in number. Since people hailing from other districts and migrant workers also reside here, the number of doses administered is high.”

On Wednesday, BBMP procured a recent supply of 45,840 doses at noon, and in the morning part, remnant doses of Tuesday were utilized.

For the 18-44 years age group, the BBMP is only administering vaccines to priority groups. He added, “There is no government order that says we can vaccinate the 18-44 age group who don’t fall under the priority groups at government vaccination sites. At our PHCs, Annexure 3 has to be produced for priority groups to get vaccinated.”
