Six construction workers at the Bengaluru airport have sustained severe burns as fire broke triggered from a container carrying thermoplastic road-marking paint and bituminous substance. Two gas cylinders utilized for heating the paint blasted during the incident and the fire spread out to the nearby underpass. The incident took place at a construction site within the premises of Kempegowda International Airport on Sunday at around 10 am, as the workers were applying paint on the new road laid near the cargo wing, according to the reports.

The reports further added the personnel from the BIAL Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Team along with five fire tenders extinguished the fire in half an hour. The six injured workers – Prashant, Goutam, Ajay Kumar, Avinash, Nageshwar Rao, and Siraj were admitted to the hospital for treatment as stated by TOI. The report revealed Siraj and Avinash had 40 percent burns, while the remaining four had minor injuries.

The six of them are presently out of danger. As per report, the police have filed a complaint against the company URC Construction, which had won the sub-contract for painting the road signage. The FIR was lodged for negligence and failure to take the necessary precautions to ensure workers’ safety and the statements of the injured will be taken after recovery.

The reports reveal the police suspect the fire outbreak was due to overheating of the highly inflammable material and paint. Report from The Hindu cited a police official revealing a technical team was assessing the situation to determine the precise cause of the accident and were waiting for a report on the incident. This is the first mishap to take place post the construction of the second terminal.
