The Centre on Wednesday declared that overall 5,86,29,000 doses of vaccines against Covid-19, which includes Covishield and Covaxin will be delivered to the states and the Union territories without any charges from May 1 to June 15. The notice also stated that the States also have the option of buying 4,87,55,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine directly from the manufacturers before the end of June 2021, which will come under the Liberalised Pricing and Accelerated National Covid-19 vaccination strategy.

In a press release, the government stated, “ A total of 5 crore 86 lakh and 29 thousand doses will be provided free of cost by the government to states from 1st May 2021 to 15th June 2021.”

The statement further added, “In addition, as per information received from vaccine manufacturers, a total of 4 crore, 87 lakh and 55 thousand doses will also be available till end of June 2021 for direct procurement by states/UTs.”

Starting from May 1, India began following the liberalised pricing and accelerated national Covid-19 vaccination strategy, in which half of the available vaccine doses of Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) are provided to the States and Union territories free of cost through the channels of the government of India. The quantity of doses allotted is according to the consumption pattern and beneficiary load and the other half the states have to obtain from the manufacturing companies directly.

The states and the Union territories have been directed by the Centre to develop advanced plans for the vaccination drive till June 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated to the officials on Tuesday that the Centre will reveal the information and data on vaccine availability 15 days in advance.
