Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Friday appealed to the residents of the country to abide by the social distancing norms and continue to wear masks as he indicated that six states of the country are having a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases. In an interview with ANI, Harsh Vardhan said, “India has the lowest fatality rate and now the vaccine is here but this is not the time to be negligent regarding Covid appropriate behaviour. Cases are rising in six states due to people’s carelessness. I urge all to abide by social distancing and wear masks.”
Vardhan’s statements come after the rise in the Covid-19 cases in the last month for the two states Maharashtra and Kerala. The several other states with spike in cases are Punjab, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu. The active Covid-19 cases on Sunday crossed the 200,000 mark, after the count was observed was January 19, as per the latest figures released by the Health Ministry.
On Friday, the state of Maharashtra registered 15,817 fresh cases, surpassing the daily count of 15,000 cases after 162 days, as per the data given by the state’s health department. Meanwhile, Kerala recorded 1,780 new cases increasing the total caseload to 1,087,443.
Maharashtra has several incidences of Covid-19 inappropriate behaviour with pandemic fatigue, gram panchayat elections, marriage celebrations, resuming of schools, crowd gathering in the public transport has led to the rise in the Covid-19 cases, according to the data given by the expert team send to Maharashtra. For several districts, partial lockdown has been declared, however, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray issued a warning of complete shutdown if the cases continue to spike.
The ministry revealed in a statement, the Central Government is constantly assessing the Covid-19 status for the containment zones and public health measures for the states and Union Territories with increase in the cases. The ministry added, “Recently, the Centre rushed high-level Public Health teams to Maharashtra and Punjab to assist in COVID-19 control and containment measures in view of the recent spike in cases in these States.”
