Padma Shri Awardee and Environmentalist Tulsi Gowda Passes Away

Ankola: Renowned environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee Tulsi Gowda (86) has passed away due to age-related ailments. A resident of Honnalli village in Ankola taluk, Uttara Kannada district, Tulsi Gowda was affectionately known as the “Tree Mother” for her unparalleled contributions to the environment.

Life and Achievements:

Tulsi Gowda belonged to the Halakki tribal community and dedicated her entire life to environmental conservation. She is credited with planting and nurturing over 30,000 saplings. Her exceptional service to nature earned her the Padma Shri award in 2021, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor.

Tulsi Gowda’s work brought recognition not only to Uttara Kannada but also across the nation. She was the second prominent woman achiever from the Halakki community, following folk artist and Padma Shri recipient Sukri Bommu Gowda.

Personal Life:

Tulsi Gowda was married off at a very young age but became a widow shortly thereafter. Despite hardships, she devoted herself to the environment with unwavering commitment. She worked as a daily laborer, earning just five to six rupees a day while gathering and selling firewood to sustain her livelihood.
