Farmers protest along the Burari’ Nirankari Samagam ground and Tikri border continues

Farmers have continued their protest at the Nirankari Samagam ground in Burari and along the Tikri border against the three farm bills passed by the Centre and continue their demand of revoking the laws.

Rampal Singh, Sanyukt Kisan Morcha said, “It has been three to four months since we are struggling, first we thought this struggle in Punjab and now we are fighting in Delhi. We will not go until these agricultural laws are withdrawn.”

Though the chilly weather of the capital city is giving a tough time to the farmers continued their agitation and have taken a firm stand to stay despite the harsh conditions till the controversial farm laws are not repealed.

Further on, the farmers are planning to have a hunger strike from Monday. Balwant Singh, Secretary, BKU Punjab said, “Everyday, eleven farmers will sit on hunger strike for 24 hours.. List of names have been prepared for the relay hunger strike.”

On Sunday, the farmer unions declared a 24-hour relay hunger strike which will be commencing from Monday and also urged the residents of the country to fast or skip a meal scheduled for December 23 on the occasion of ‘Kisan Diwas’. The farmers unions’ leaders mentioned that they had also decided to clear the Haryana Toll Plaza from December 25 -27.

On Sunday, the Central Government had taken the initiative and invited the farmers leaders for a fresh round of discussion as an attempt to end the agitation. Several rounds of discussion have been held with the farmers by the Centre till now. Earlier, on December 8, the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah had conducted a meeting with the 13 leaders or representatives of the farm unions. But, despite the resolution attempts, a day post the meeting, the farmers leaders rejected the proposal issued by the Centre.

The farmers, in large numbers, from different parts of the country have been protesting from November 26 against the three farm laws passed by the Centre – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 and are demanding for repealing of the contentious laws by their protests.
