Farmers will not head back till the farm laws are repealed says Rakesh Tikait

Rakesh Tikait, spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) clearly told to the media that the protesting farmers have no intention of returning back to their homes until the government takes the decision to repeal the three controversial farm laws passed in September. Tikait said such as the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of the farm laws in its verdict after hearing to the petitions today.

Tikait stated, “Unless and until the laws are taken back, we will not return to our homes.”

As the farmers stay put on their demand for repealing of the contentious laws, the Supreme Court issues to form a committee of four members for having a discussion with the farmers regarding their demands. The members appointed in the committee include Bhupinder Singh Mann, Parmod Kumar Joshi, Director for South Asia, International Food Research Institute, Ashok Gulati who is an agricultural economist and President of Shetkeri Sangathan, Maharashtra, Anil Ghanwant.

Youth leader of BKU, Gaurav Tikait stated the Supreme Court stay on the contentious farm laws will lead to the victory path of the protesting farmers.

He said, “Our fight is for Minimum Support Price (MSP). The laws have been imposed on us by the government. Why should the farmers sell the produce at half the rates? This is a big fight and we will win. As far as the movement goes, it will go on and the farmers will not go anywhere.”

AP Singh, one of the lawyer representatives of one of them who filed the petition, revealed the order of the Supreme Court is a victory for the farmers and a lost battle for the government.

He said, “Supreme Court has stayed the implementation of the farm laws against which petitions were filed in the court. It has also constituted a committee.”

Farmers from various parts of the country have been protesting along the borders of New Delhi from November 26, 2020 for revoking the three contentious farm laws passed by the Government – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
