Five Maternal Deaths in BIMS: Shocking Revelations, Government Announces Compensation

Ballari: Five maternal deaths have been reported at the Ballari District Hospital (BIMS) following the administration of IV fluids. On November 9, nine women underwent cesarean deliveries, and within two hours of receiving IV fluids post-delivery, all of them fell critically ill.

The deceased mothers have been identified as Nandini, Lalithamma, Roja, Muskan, and Sumaiya. The remaining four women have recovered and been discharged. Among the affected, seven women were suffering from kidney failure and multiple organ dysfunction. Tests conducted at BIMS revealed that three of them had leptospirosis (rat fever).

Sumaiya, a 25-year-old battling kidney failure and rat fever, succumbed to her illness on December 5 despite receiving prolonged treatment. All the deceased women were under the age of 25, adding to the tragedy’s severity.

Health Minister’s Response:
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao addressed the incident, stating, “We are conducting a thorough investigation to identify the lapses in the hospital. Action will be taken against the company responsible for producing the IV fluids. Compensation has been announced for the families of the deceased. Steps will be taken to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.”
