Heavy rains worsen the floods in Karnataka, dams to release water

Extreme heavy rainfall in parts of north Karnataka has further aggravated the flood situation on Thursday which has invoked the authorities to release some water from the dams.

The most affected regions due to the torrential rainfall are Yadgir, Raichur, Belagavi, Dakshina Kannada, Udipi, Uttara Kannada, Haveri and Dharwad. As per the reports given by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre, the floodgates of the dams have been unleashed which has led to overflowing of water, thereby forming islands at different locations.

The dams brimming with water were Linganamakki, Supa, Varahi, Hemavathi, Krishna Raja Sagar, Kabini, Bhadra, Tungabhadra, Malaprabha and Narayanapura. The river Bhima has created havoc in Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts, and the Krishna river is at the verge of overflowing panicking Raichur district.

The sources from Karnataka Disaster Management Authority has reported that 515 animals died, and 4,782 people have been rehabilitated to 36 relief camps opened by the district administration.

The NDRF team has rescued people stuck at Haragadde, Karakalagadde in Raichur in the temporary island as water was released from the dam across Krishna river. This is the third wave of floods in Karnataka over a period of three months.
