The Indian Air Force will set up a Covid-19 facility with bed capacity of around 100 patients at the Air Force Station Jalahalli which is based in the northern limits of Bengaluru. As per an official statement, the facility having the first 20 beds will be functional as scheduled from May 6 comprising oxygen concentrators.

After the state gives assurance adhering to the oxygen availability in adequate amounts, the remaining 80 beds will be functional by May 20. From the 100 beds in the Covid-19 facility, there will be 10 ICU beds and 40 beds will be piped with oxygen and the other half of the beds will have oxygen concentrators.

The statement further said, “The facility will be manned by specialists, doctors, nurses and paramedical staff provided by the Command Hospital Air Force, Bengaluru. Admission to the facility will be coordinated by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Govt of Karnataka through a nodal officer.”

The officer further added, “The Government of Karnataka has assured necessary support for pharmacy, oxygen and security.”
Bengaluru has been witnessing adequate shortage of ICU and ventilator beds along with the lack of medical oxygen supply, and the social media has been flooded with the SOS messages asking ICU beds for the severely affected Covid-19 patients. Nearly all the hospitals, both the private and government have been operational at 90 per cent or full capacity.

With the worsening situation on a daily basis, the Karnataka High Court had asked the state and the BBMP to approach the armed forces for help.
Karnataka on Monday registered a count of 44,438 Covid-19 cases and 239 fatalities related to the deadly virus, raising the cumulative caseload and fatalities to 16.46 lakh and 16,250 respectively, 20,901 patients have recovered according to the data given by the Health Department.
