India be the fastest country vaccinating more than 7 million against Covid-19, says Govt data

India, with its largest Covid-19 vaccination drive in the world, to be the fastest country to cross the 7 million mark for vaccinating people against Covid-19, which extends to a minimum of 50 % of the targeted health workers within the first 26 days of the campaign launch, reveals the reports and government data.

From the records revised on February 10, Wednesday, as many as 50 per cent of the total certified social health activists and community health workers representing the National Health Mission (NHM) have also been administered the Covid-19 vaccine.

The vaccination drive, initiated on January 16, within a period of 26 days has crossed the 7 million mark, making India the fastest, followed by the US, who completed the mark in 27 days, as per the details revealed by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Dr MC Misra, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Delhi), Director, stated, “The idea to start Covid-19 vaccination with health care workers made sense for the precise reason that if there were any glitches, those would be addressed before the drive is scaled up. It is picking up and states are vaccinating more numbers on a daily basis. This is a positive step.”

The two vaccines which are a part of the Indian vaccination drive are Covishield, manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII) and developed by Oxford University-AstraZeneca, and Covaxin developed Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech. In the first phase, the healthcare workers were administered the vaccine, with the total estimated target to be 10 million of them as per their registration on the government portal.
