India takes the lead after US recording 1 lakh cases on a daily basis

India has become the second country in the world post the United States to have over 100,000 cases of the Covid-19 disease in a single day at any time amid the pandemic. As per the data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday, India recorded 103,796 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The overall caseload of India now tallies to 12,589,067 according to the health ministry dashboard at 8 am.

The current count of over 1 lakh has broken the highest record of one-day spike that India has witnessed of 99,181 amid the first wave of the pandemic in September. On the other side, the US recorded over 100,000 cases in November last year for the first time. According to the daily Covid-19 tracker of John Hopkins University, the US records 65,000 new cases daily and India’s single day count has increased.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus from the World Health Organization has said that in June 2020, over 100,000 cases were recorded daily in the world. And, after nearly nine months, India alone is recording 103,796 cases on a daily basis. With the rising fear of the second wave, the state of Maharashtra is put under virtual lockdown and a senior government official will be reviewing the urgency of the situation.

According to the health ministry, 11 states of Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have been categorized as states of ‘grave concern’ due to the rising cases and deaths due to Covid-19 on a daily basis.
