India, Uzbekistan together against terrorism, says PM Modi at virtual summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the opening of the virtual summit with Uzbekistan, spoke about the Afghanistan issues, saying in order to revive peace in Afghanistan, the negotiations managed with the Taliban should be Afghan-led, Afghan owned and Afghan controlled.

Amid his opening address, PM Modi said, “Both the countries are on the same page when it comes to regional security and we stand together against terrorism. The two countries (India and Uzbekistan) have agreed that in order to restore peace in Afghanistan, the negotiations with the Taliban must be Afghan-led and Afghan controlled.”

While addressing the summit, Modi congratulated President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on five years of his tenure, which will be complete by December 14. Modi stated, “I was really looking forward to visiting Uzbekistan this year but due to COVID-19 pandemic, my journey was not possible hence. But, I am happy that with the “work from anywhere” model, we are meeting each other virtually.”

As per the details given by Prime Minister’s Office, the leaders will have a broader discussion pertaining to the complete spectrum of the bilateral relationship, which will also emphasize on strengthening of India-Uzbekistan cooperation in the world after Covid-19. The regional and global issues of mutual interest would be some other points of discussion.

Modi iterated Indian and Uzbekistan being two rich civilizations. He added, “The two countries share an old, strong bond. Our views on the current challenges and approach towards them are extremely similar.”

The PMO mentioned about the continued high-level exchanges between India and Uzbekistan. The PMO website further read, “The visits of Prime Minister Modi to Uzbekistan in 2015 and 2016 and President Mirziyoyev to India in 2018 and 2019 have imparted a new dynamism to the strategic partnership.”

It further stated that various government to government agreements are anticipated to be concluded coinciding with the virtual summit.
