The Council on the Status of the Women(CSW) is a functional and operational commission of UN Economic and Social Council(ECOSOC).
The 54th member ECOSOC, having the first plenary meeting for the 2021 session in the General Assembly Hall on Monday. The meeting consisted of elections contesting for two seats amid Afghanistan, Indian and China in the Asia-Pacific States category. Afghanistan, which is represented by Ambassador Adela Raz received 39 votes and India got 38 votes from the 54 ballots cast.
China, though a permanent member of UN Security Council, received only 27 votes and even did not make it half-way through with 28 votes.
India’s Permanent Representative to UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti posted on Twitter, “India wins seat in prestigious #ECOSOC body! India elected Member of Commission on Status of Women #CSW.
