Karnataka govt launches application for availing direct cash benefits

The Karnataka government on Thursday launched its own application for its own direct benefit transfer (DBT) to assist the beneficiaries of 120 welfare schemes. While rolling out the application, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa revealed the platform was curated by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (e-governance). Yediyurappa said, “The government’s intention to bring in transparency in governance will be fulfilled when all citizens make best use of the DBT app and keep informed about the transfer benefits.”

He informed the state government had done a direct transfer of Rs 12,000 crore into the bank accounts of beneficiaries availing the 120 schemes amid the past couple of years.

Yediyurappa further said, “The app will also eliminate misuse of funds, middlemen and loopholes, as accounts of beneficiaries are linked to their Aadhar unique identity number,” said the Chief Minister. The state government has disbursed economic relief aid to all the beneficiaries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic’s first and second waves. “All schemes providing financial assistance to the beneficiaries have been linked to the DBT scheme.”

The developed application determines the beneficiaries with the Aadhar number, which is taken as the address and the amount is then directly credited into the bank account linked to the Aadhar number. The application is available for downloads on Google Play Store and can be registered via the e-KYC process and will be directly linked to the National Payments Corporation of India and accordingly revise the details on the current status of the bank seeding.

Application Project Director, Jayanthi said, “The DBT mobile app will also provide scheme-wise information on instalments of transferred amount, date of digital payment, bank account number and UTR (unique transaction reference) number.”

Earlier on May 19, Yediyurappa had declared the secondary installment of the relief packages of Covid-19 worth Rs 1,250 crore. The government revealed that according to the COVID-19 relief package, an amount of Rs 3,000 will be disbursed for each of the auto and taxi drivers and construction workers. The relief package had also allotted Rs 2,000 for workers in the unorganized sector which constitutes barbers, tailors, ragpickers, potters. Alongside, the state government also declared Rs 10,000 per hectare for floriculture farmers. The hortriculture farmers would also be getting Rs 10,000 per hectare which will be beneficial for nearly 69,000 farmers, according to the state government. The street vendors would also be given a sum of Rs 2,000 as a part of the relief package.
