With the rising cases of Covid-19 infections in the state, the Karnataka government is reconsidering their earlier decision of resuming the offline classes for the schools and colleges following the Unlock 5.0 guidelines given by centre.

The Karnataka Primary and Secondary department has made a collective decision to prolong the decision for a minimum of one month. An official from the department quoted, “The government has almost decided not to open schools and PU colleges at least for another one month. We cannot afford to take chances with children’s lives by reopening schools at this juncture.”

Karnataka Health Minister, B Sriramulu, had organized a meeting on Tuesday to discuss about reopening of schools and the various risk factors attached to it. The meeting was organized by the health department officials on request of the the education department to conclusively decide based on the severity of the situation.

Sriramulu said, “We (Health Department) will submit a report to the education department listing out recommendations on reopening schools after more talks with paediatricians, academicians and other stakeholders.”

One of the paediatricians mentioned in the meeting, “Today, out of the 100 samples, 12 to 15 tested positive for Covid-19. This must come down at least to five  before we can think of reopening schools.”
