According to the 2011 census of the Health Department, the elderly population of the state is estimated to be 54,87,399. ‘
Presently, only four per cent of the elderly population (above 60 years of age), which accounts to 2,17,085 of them ever since the vaccination drive began on March 1.
The highest number of senior citizens from all the 30 districts of the state are residents of Bengaluru Urban with a count of 9,11,336 from which only 91,312 have been the beneficiaries of the vaccination drive.
This accounts to 10 per cent vaccination coverage which is the highest for Karnataka in comparison to other districts. Following Bengaluru Urban, Belagavi has the second highest number of senior citizens with 4,47,953 and 6,876 have been the beneficiaries of vaccination, which accounts to only 1.5 per cent.
The several other districts with the highest number of senior citizens are Mysuru with 2,79,185 from which 3.6 per cent are vaccinated, followed by Tumakuru having 2,69,585 from which 7.2 per cent are vaccinated, and Dakshina Kannada with 2,01,609 from which 3.6 per cent has been vaccinated.
