Ninth round of talk amid between farmers and government inconclusive, next discussion scheduled for Jan 19

The ninth round of talks between the Government and the farmers leaders remained inconclusive as the farmers were adamant on their repealing of the controversial farm laws and the government with the three central ministers urged them to have a little more flexibility in their approach and expressed some willingness in their conversation to bring in some amendments in the laws. Both the parties have mutually decided to have a tenth round of talks scheduled for January 19.

Post the meeting, Joginder SinghUgrahan, one of the farmer leaders revealed to the reporters about how the unions demand repealing the three contentious laws and the Centre did not agree for the same. Joginder said, “We decided to meet again on January 19 at 12 pm.”

The five-hours long meeting with a lunch break went through with the farmers iterating on their agreement to have direct talks for resolving the deadlock pertaining to the three farm laws and though a committee was formulated by Supreme Court for resolving the issue.

While addressing the opening remarks, the Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar appealed to the farmer leaders to be more flexible in their approach. The meeting consisted of 40 farmer unions representatives along with Piyush Goyal, Railways, Commerce and Food Minister and Som Parkash, Minister of State for Commerce.

Several farmer unions representatives spoke about the meeting. Balijit Singh Bali from Punjab Kisan Morcha said, “In his opening remarks, Tomar ji said you keep saying that the government is adamant and making it an issue of ego, even though we have accepted several demands. Don’t you think you should be flexible and not stick to one single demand of repealing the laws.”

Kavita Kuruganti, All India Kisan Sangharsh Committee said, “”Both the government and farmer unions have reaffirmed their commitment to continue with the direct dialogue process.”

Rakesh Tikait said, “Government has told us that solution should be found through dialogue and not a court. Everyone is of the same views. There is a possibility of some solution.”

Thousands of farmers have been protesting along the borders of New Delhi protesting for repealing the three controversial farm laws passed by the Centre.
