Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deepest condolences on Tuesday for the victims and the lives lost in the fire that was incident in Kolkata on Monday morning and declared an approval of Rs 2 lakh as ex-gratia for the next of the kin of the deceased persons, and a sum of Rs 50,000 for the people who have been injured severely in the fire.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal informed that a count of nine people, which comprises of four people from the fire department, two Railway personnel and an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police (ASI) lost their lives in the 13-floored office building of the Eastern Railway in Kolkata’s Strand Road.
ON Tuesday morning, the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted, “PM Narendra Modi has approved an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs each from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of the kin of those who have lost their lives due to the tragic fire in Kolkata. Rs 50,000 would be given to those seriously injured.”
PM Modi also tweeted, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to fire tragedy in Kolkata. In this hour of sadness, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited the place of accident earlier and declared a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and government jobs to one member of the deceased person’s next of kin.
At around 6 pm, fire broke out on the top floor of the 13-floored building on Monday evening. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and other Railway employees immediately rushed to the 13th floor and helped evacuate the other people present there, according to an official statement. Around 6:30 pm, the fire brigade arrived for the operations to contain the fire, which was completed by 11 pm.
