PM Modi hosts Sri Lankan counterpart Mahindra Rajapaksha in a virtual summit

India in a virtual bilateral meet with Sri Lanka asked them to work on enforcing constitutional provisions channelized towards giving more consideration to the Tamil-inhabited areas in terms of power. Though, India announced $15 million grant to promote ties between the two countries.

The virtual bilateral meet focused on building mutual peace and reconciliation, maritime security, resolving the economic crisis emerged due to pandemic.

Modi further discussed about the $15 million grant, which will be directed towards building and renovating Buddhist monasteries, archaeological cooperation and making several attempts to support the Buddhist clergy.

Joint secretary (of Indian Ocean Region), Amit Narang mentioned at a media briefing after the summit that India will be supporting the move “including through the full implementation of the 13th amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution”.

He further termed the discussion as a positive one and stated, “Both sides remain committed to these ventures and are working towards ensuring their implementation for mutual benefit.”
