The resident doctors in New Delhi and across different states of the country have initiated a day-long black ribbon protest against Baba Ramdev’s derogatory remarks on Allopathy. The Federation Of Resident Doctors’ Associations initiated the protest, which consists of 20,000 members from the government hospitals throughout New Delhi.
The doctors will continue with their routine work whilst wearing a black ribbon and none of the medical services will be affected.
The president, Resident doctors’ association of Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, Dr. Manish Kumar said, “We would like to say that the protest is not against ayurveda, but against Baba Ramdev and his statements about allopathic doctors.”.
The Indian Medical Association along with MA-Junior Doctor’s Network have also taken the call to join the protest. The letters declaring the protest were released on Monday night by the resident doctors’ association of several hospitals, which also includes All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
The other hospitals that issued letters are Sanjay Gandhi hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, ESI hospital, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, AIIMS-Rishikesh, IMA Rajasthan, Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), and Karnataka Association of Resident Doctors (KARD).
The controversy was fuelled by the two videos of yoga guru Baba Ramdev which were trending, termed allopathy as “stupid science”, and also added that people including 10,000 allopathic doctors died though vaccinated.
To which, IMA clarified that 753 doctors lost their lives amid the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic when vaccines were not issued and 513 doctors succumbed to the disease in the second wave of Covid-19 till now. The letter stated, “None in the first wave could receive the vaccine and the majority who had died in the second wave also could not take their vaccine for various reasons.”
