SC inquiries from Centre about farmers protection against Covid-19 amid their protests

The Supreme Court on Thursday passed an inquiry to the Central government about the protection of the farmers from Covid-19 who are protesting along different borders of the national capital.

A bench of three judges of the Apex Court led by Chief Justice of India, Sharad Arvind Bobde inquired the Solicitor General (SG), Tushar Mehta saying, “You must tell us what is happening? I don’t know if farmers are protected from COVID.”

The SC bench further asked if the farmers were following the norms of Covid-19, and maintaining precautionary measures against Covid-19. To which, Mehta responded, “We will find the status and infirm this court about it.

The Supreme Court was hearing a plea lodged by Advocate On Record- Om Prakash Parihar and lawyer, Dushyant Tiwari, giving the voice to advocate-cum petitioner, Supriya Pandita for the case.

The petitioner wanted several guidelines inclusive of Central Bureau of Investigation’s investigation into the assembly of people around the Anand Vihar Bus Terminal along with the Tablighi Jamaat congregation which happened at Nizammudin Markaz in New Delhi post declaration of the country-wide lockdown on March 24 to stop the contagion of the Coronavirus.

The petition further asked about the role of the Centre, the Delhi government and the Delhi Police regarding the risk to the lives of millions in the country by giving permission to the huge gathering in the Markaz area.
