The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down the petitions filed against the evaluation scheme for Class 12 students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), further iterating that the system is fair, reasonable, and for the larger benefit of the students.
Earlier, last week the Supreme Court approved the system or formula as the board examinations were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The apex court also refused an individual challenge by the students who want the board examinations called off to be taken for private or compartment students of CBSE.
Another appeal was lodged by the Uttar Pradesh Parents Association asking for the choice to give an optional exam to be provided, which was also dismissed by the court. Following the scheme, the students will be given the facility to give an improvement exam provided they are not content with the result given following the assessment scheme of CBSE and ICSE.
A bench comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari amid dismissing the petitions, stated, “We find no reason to interfere with the CBSE, CISCE scheme. We find it fair and reasonable, takes care of all sets of students and is in the larger public interest.”
CBSE has planned to have the optional exam between August 15 and September 15 and CISCE has planned to finish it prior to September 1, considering the current situation of Covid-19.
The Association demanded fo a specific date for declaring the results of the improvement exam and the same should be followed.
Attorney General KK Venugopal, who is standing for Centre said, “The UGC (University Grants Commission) will give instructions to all colleges and professional institutes not to begin admissions till results (of optional exams that may be conducted) are declared.”
Further on, the Supreme Court also dismissed the application lodged by three candidates from the private compartment asking for the cancellation of examinations to be held from August 15 to September 15.
