Show full data on procurement of Covid-19 vaccines: SC to Centre

The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to produce the complete data about the purchase history of the three Covid-19 vaccines, which are currently used in the vaccination drive throughout the country, as it proceeded with the suo-moto hearing about the Covid-19 crisis management in the country. The three vaccines are -Oxford University-AstraZeneca’s Covishield, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin administered in two doses and Russian vaccine Sputnik V given in single dose.

The trial was heard by a three judge bench constituting Justices DY Chandrachud, L Nageswara Rao and S Ravindra Bhat passed the orders saying, “The data should clarify the dates of all procurement orders placed by the central government for all three vaccines, the quality of vaccines as ordered on each date, and the projected date of supply.”

The Supreme Court further asked for details about the exact percentage of people vaccinated in the country with the single dose as well as both doses.

The bench also directed the Centre to make a plan about vaccination of the remaining population. It also issued orders to the Centre to take the required steps for the predominance of Mucormycosis in patients recovered from Covid-19.

The Court said an affidavit with these details should be filed by Union of India in a couple of weeks and the next hearing is scheduled for June 30.

The Court said, “We also note that the Union of India’s stated position in its affidavit dated 9 May 2021 is that every state/UT government shall provide vaccination free of cost to its population,” directing central and state governments to file an affidavit in couple of weeks
