Six states in India presently encompass around 86 per cent of the fresh cases of Covid-19 disease, according to the data given by the government. The daily spike in Covid-19 cases have been reported by states – Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
14,989 new cases have been registered on Wednesday throughout the country, from which Maharashtra has recorded the highest daily fresh cases at 7,863, after which comes Kerala with 2,938 cases, and Punjab recorded 729 new cases.
As per the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Karnataka have been reported to be having the maximum number of new cases on a week-on-week basis.
The health ministry in a statement said, “Maharashtra alone accounted for a weekly increase of 16,012 cases, in terms of the number of cases. In percentage terms, Punjab reported the weekly increase of 71.5% (1,783 cases).”
The Centre has sent teams to these states for assisting local authorities to handle the situation, will trace the cause and initial findings reveal that large gatherings and the fall in overall testing led to the spike.
A senior government official, wanted to be anonymous said, “It is a season of weddings, and people tend to gather in large numbers on such occasions and also there is somewhat laxity in observing Covid-19 appropriate behaviour. Another reason could be drop in overall testing as some of the states where there has been seen a surge, Covid-19 testing relatively went down. The teams have been directed to brief the state authorities in detail about the reasons so that the situation can be managed accordingly.”
The team comprising of three members led by joint secretary level officers in the health ministry have been rushed to Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement, the health ministry said, “States/UTs have been advised to maintain a continued rigorous vigil for containing the spread of Covid-19 such the gains of collective efforts are not squandered away. Need for effective testing, comprehensive tracking, prompt isolation of positive cases and quick quarantine of close contacts are strongly emphasised.”
