After months of being kept on hold, the demand for the Covid-19 isolation coaches is back. A small demand has been placed by Nandurbar, which is a Maharashtra district located in the vicinity of Gujarat borders for about 95 coaches and 1500 beds.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding formalized between Western Railways and the district authorities on April 11 stated, “Each Covid-19 care rake will have 20 coaches, comprising modified Sleeper and General coaches; each coach can accommodate 16 patients. The coaches will be suitably positioned as mutually agreed upon between the district administration of Nandurbar and divisional administration of Mumbai division of Western Railways.”
Presently, the district is under lockdown till April 15 and has reported around 400 cases everyday from March. On Monday, Maharashtra recorded around 51,751 fresh cases of Covid-19, with its lowest count on April 5 raising the total tally to 3,458,996 and also reported 258 fatalities taking the total death count to 58,245. From the count of 258, 169 occurred in last 24 hours and 59 in the previous week.
The Covid-19 isolation coaches were curated for patients with mild symptoms in regions where the states have exploited the facilities and for augmenting the capacities for isolation of both potentially anticipated and confirmed cases.
The Railways will take complete responsibility of the elementary infrastructure and maintenance of the premises with recurrent cleaning and sanitization, catering to housekeeping requirements like linen, blankets, provision of bio-toilets, power and electricity, water, communication amenities and marking of several regions.
