15 rescued from NTPC tunnel amid the Uttarakhand glacier burst

As the state of Uttarakhand hit with a the glacier burst triggered flash floods, the rescue operations are on the way, where the Chamoli police of the state revealed that a JCB machine was being utilized for entering the premises of National Thermal Power Corporation’s (NTPC) tunnel in the vicinity of the Tapovan area for rescuing the workers stuck inside during the calamity.

As of now, a count of 14 bodies have been recovered and 15 people have been rescued by the rescue team.

The Chamoli Police wrote on its official Twitter handle about the latest update. The tweet read, “Relief and rescue operations continue for people trapped inside the tunnel. Efforts underway to enter the tunnel with the help of JCB machine and clear the way. Total 15 people have been rescued and 14 bodies recovered from various places thus far.”

The rescue operations at the 900-metre-long tunnel were paused citing the increase in the water level.

Alongside, another agency, from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has also been involvced in the rescue operations for the people stuck in the tunnel. Vivek Pandey, the spokesperson of the force said, “We’ve intensified search operations at the second tunnel. Our information is that around 30 people are trapped there. Around 300 ITBP jawans are deployed to clear the tunnel. Local administration says that around 170 people are missing.”

He further added, ““ITBP rescued 12 people from a tunnel yesterday, these 30 are trapped in a different tunnel. Rescue operations underway in different areas. More teams will be sent there if required, we’re focusing on rescuing people from the tunnel first.”
