Kanpur doctors learning about Italian model to assess the possible second wave of COVID-19.

With the rising fear and suspicion of a second wave of Covid-19 hitting the country this winter, the doctors working at the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, based in Kanpur are assessing the Italian model. And,  simultaneously holding discussions with the experts from that country, for understanding the measures to prepare better for any eventuality related to the Covid-19 front.

The main objective is to control the mortality rate that Italy contained when the second wave of Covid-19 infection hit Europe. Nearly 740 people have succumbed to the virus and other complications in the city of Kanpur over period of last 4 months.

Dr. Saurabh Agarwal, Associate Professor at the medicine department, stated regarding the particular changes created for management of the crisis and the treatment guidelines. He said, “We have consulted experts in Italy and studied how they are handling the second wave.”

The doctors at the facility would follow the ICMR guidelines, however, some particular changes would be ensured regarding taking care of the patients.

According to the Italian Model, a special team consisting of a physician, a pulmonary expert, neurologist and a cardiologist would constantly assess the condition of the patients remotely via Zoom calls or meetings and alter the treatment protocol according to their progress.

He said, “Use of technology will help in augmenting the watch over the patients. Physical rounds of wards can be (taken) once or more than once. But with technology, we can take Zoom rounds several times in a day.”

“We are following ICMR guidelines religiously, yet we will be incorporating our efforts in the treatment plan,” Dr. Agarwal further added.

Presently, in Kanpur, most number of deaths, nearly 569, have taken place at the Lala Lajpat Rai government hospital, particularly for the critical cases.

He added, “The Zoom rounds have started from October 30 in the wards. The team of experts gathers the details of patients from doctors in the wards. They do micro level discussion among themselves and plan the treatment.”

Moreover, alterations in the line of treatment, has assisted in saving the lives of a number of patients. For the patients, with co-morbidities, experimental medication therapy of anti-viral dosage and steroids have helped in the recovery of the patients.
