China stands by India over hosting 2021 BRICS summit

China has extended its support to India for hosting the BRICS Summit for 2021 and stated about collaboration with New Delhi to further build the cooperation with five member group countries over emerging economies.

India has taken over the Chairmanship for BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) for the year 2021 and is all geared up for hosting the 2021 summit. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on February 19, launched the website for BRICS India 2021 at the BRICS Secretariat, Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi.

When inquired about India taking over the BRICS Chairmanship, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Webin addressed a media briefing iterating that Beijing will completely support New Delhi towards hosting the summit.

Wang said, “The BRICS is a cooperation mechanism with global influence consisting of emerging economies and developing countries. In recent years, it has seen greater solidarity and deeper practical cooperation and greater influence.”

Wang said that BRICS is “positive, stable and constructive force” pertaining to adhering international affairs, adding that China attaches importance to this mechanism.

Wang said, “We are committed to deepening strategic partnership within it to consolidate solidarity and cooperation.”

He said, “We support India hosting this year’s meeting and will work with it and other members to strengthen communication dialogue and consolidate the three-pillar cooperation, expand BRICS plus cooperation and work for greater progress under BRICS and also help the world to defeat Covid-19, resume economic growth and improve global governance.”
