AMU VC signs up as the first volunteer for third phase trial of Covaxin

Professor Tariq Mansoor, the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has signed up to be the first volunteer for the third phase clinical trials for vaccine candidate Covaxin at the JN Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday.

At the JN Medical College on Tuesday, the registrations took place for the volunteers, who has affiliation to AMU. The vaccine will be administered to the registered volunteers later.

Professor Mansoor himself registered as a volunteer for the trials, in order to motivate and inspire people to come forward and stated that Covaxin Phase III trial comes with the objective of assessing the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine candidate which comes with a collaboration between Indian Council of Medical Reserach (ICMR) and Bharat Biotech.

Prof Mansoor stated, “By volunteering for a trial or study, one gets a chance to participate in ground breaking research and contribute to developing better cures and treatment options,” appealing the people from different age groups and economic background to participate I the clinical trials.

Prof Shahid Ali Siddiqui, the principal of JNMCH revealed about an ethics committee which was formulated comprising of doctors, lawyers, social workers for efficient management of the clinical trials and the needed staff for conducting the clinical trials has been assigned.

Principal investigator Prof Mohammad Shameen stated the Phase 1 and Phase 11 clinical trials garnered a lot of positive response from the masses. Following the ICMR guidelines, the volunteers for the clinical trials will receive the travel expenditure along with the committed benefits.
