The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi revealed to the reporters in a briefing on Thursday that any updates pertaining to the Emergency Use Listing (EUL) authorization of Bharat Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine by the World Health Organisation (WHO) are being closely monitored by the Centre.
ANI cited Bagchi saying, “We are closely following the developments regarding efforts by Bharat Biotech to obtain Emergency Use Listing (EUL) authorization from the World Health Organisation.”
Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has expressed confidence over receiving the approval of the UN’s body according to “its experience of getting its other vaccines prequalified by WHO”, and that approval is anticipated for EUL from July-September. Bharat Biotech has claimed that nearly 90 % of the documents needed have been submitted to the WHO and the remnants will be sent by July.
The company had held a pre-submission meeting with the WHO. MEA is constantly reaching out to Bharat Biotech over securing the approval of WHO for the ‘made-in-India’ vaccine – Covaxin.
The lack of WHO’s approval has been disrupting the travel plans of the people as several countries will only accept only those vaccines listed by WHO. Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee addressed Prime Minister Modi urging for his involvement in the approval process.
Banerjee said to Modi, “A large number of students from all over the country travel abroad every year for higher studies and many of them have got themselves vaccinated with Covaxin. They came to learn later on that their vaccination certificate is not valid abroad. These students are now in a fix regarding their next course of action and their career is at stake,” according to PTI.
