Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited, the company which has been formed to resolve the garbage problems of the city will commence its work in July, exactly four months post the state government approved the project.

Amid the first board meeting held on Thursday, the company officials talked about appointing the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), as they nominated BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta to take charge as the CEO.

A statement from the Urban Department read, “The screening committee constituted on June 16 will assist the board in finalising a CEO.” Rakesh Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Department chaired the meeting.

The release further stated, “Operations of the company is expected to take off from July 1. The company aims to collect, segregate, transport, process, compost, recycle and dispose of all types of solid waste.”

The state government said the inability of the BBMP to exclusively work on solid waste management led to creating a new company, and the officials already in the SWM department of BBMP may be appointed in the company.

The sources revealed the current regime is observed to be an expensive affair with heavy pilferage of the funds. The source revealed, “We are spending up to Rs 12,000 crore on garbage collection and disposal.”
The source also said, “The idea is to reduce the pilferage and make the company self-reliant in the long run by encouraging borrowings rather than pumping money from the exchequer.”
