The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday declared that the Delta variant along with an additional mutation called “Delta Plus” has been identified in the country which neutralizes the utilization of monoclonal antibody but affirmed about it still not being the “variant of concern”.

NITI Aayog Member (health), Dr. VK Paul said, “Delta variant played a major role in 2nd wave. An additional mutation of this variant, known as ‘Delta Plus’, has been detected and submitted to the global data system. It has been seen in Europe since March and was brought into a public domain on June 13.”

Paul confirmed that Delta Plus is a ‘variant of interest’ and has not yet been classified as a ‘variant of concern’ and will be reviewed via Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia (INSACOG).

He further added, “As per data available in the public domain, this variant nullifies the use of a monoclonal antibody. We will study and learn about this variant.”

As many states are underway unlocking, Paul said, “Responsibility and discipline are two important things for unlocking,” saying people should maintain social distancing.

Alongside, India recorded 60,471 fresh cases of Covid-19, the minimum count in 75 days, while the positivity rate declined to 3.45 percent, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
