The farmer unions protesting along the borders of New Delhi against the three contentious farm laws passed by the Centre in September have proposed to have the next round of talks scheduled with the Centre on December 29.

Yogendra Yadav, President, Swaraj India, said the government wanted to have a discussion with the farmers. At a joint press conference at Singhu Border, he made the announcement of the next meeting. He said, “We are making this proposal on the behalf of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha after talking to all the organizations that talks between representatives of farmers and the central government should be held on December 29 at 11 am.”

Yadav further added,”The first two points in our agenda for talks are – modalities to repeal the three farm laws, and mechanism and procedure to bring a law for providing legal guarantee on MSP.”

He stated about the ‘letter diplomacy’ and the letter passed by the Centre to hold a discussion. He said, “Letter diplomacy is going on. We reply to the letters sent by the Central Government in about two days and the government replies to our letter within hours. Within a few hours of our last letter, Joint Secretary of Agriculture Ministry wrote to us and proposed talks. So, we have decided to go for talks.”

On December 24, Joint Secretary in Agriculture Ministry, Vivek Agarwal wrote to the farmer unions appealing them to finalize a date and time for the next round of talks. In his letter, he has written that the government is dedicated to reaching logical solutions regrading the issues put forth by the farmer. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spoke in an event on Friday, which was to release the next installment under the PM-KISAN scheme, said the government is all set to have discussions to resolve the apprehensions and concerns of the farmers regarding the farm laws at any time.

The protests of farmers have been going for 31 consecutive days now along the borders of the national capital demanding to repeal the three farm laws passed by the Centre.
