Fire destroys the largest refugee camp inhabiting Moria migrants in Lesbos, Greece

A fire break-down happened in Greece’s largest, overcrowded migrant camp, destroying it by the early hours of morning. The refugee camp which was set up in lockdown, and the destruction has rendered more than 12,000 migrants in dire need of shelter. The fire was settled in by 25 firefighters with 10 engines as the evacuation of migrants took place. Any specific injuries to the migrants have not been reported.

A lot of restrictions were imposed in the Moria camp and the surrounding area from the past week post a Somali resident was discovered Covid-19 positive.

Several reports have claimed that the protest of migrants led to ignition of fire. However, the involvement of migrants is still not confirmed. Government spokesperson Stelios Pestas said, “It has been a very difficult night.” He further mentioned that arson was being considered as a possible reason of the fire.

Around 35 people at the camp were found to be positively infected for Coronavirus as reported by the Health authorities on Tuesday.
