India approves first Covid-19 vaccine, developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca

India has given the approval for emergency use authorization to the Covid-19 vaccine candidate developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, which will inch towards the huge immunisation campaign in the country with the second highest population in the world.

Prakash Javadekar, Information and Broadcast Minister revealed to the reporters on Saturday regarding the vaccine approval given on Friday, giving a confirmation regarding what the sources told Reuters.

India, with the second highest number of Covid-19 infections in the world after the US, has given approval to the first Covid-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.

Javadekar further iterated about three more vaccines waiting in the line for further approval. He said, “India is perhaps the only country where at least four vaccines are getting ready.”

Referring to the fact about Serum Institute of India’s indigenous vaccine candidate, he said, “One was approved yesterday for emergency use, Serum’s COVISHIELD.”
