India on Monday has expressed ‘deep concern’ regarding the recent developments in Myanmar and iterated about its belief that the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld. On Monday, the Myanmar military had staged a coup and detained various civilian leaders along with state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Ministry of External Affairs released a statement saying the situation is being monitored closely. The statement read, “We have noted the developments in Myanmar with deep concern. India has always been steadfast in its support to the process of democratic transition in Myanmar. We believe that the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld. We are monitoring the situation closely.”

The military had announced an emergency of one year in the country, after the coup where Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint and several senior officials have been detained.

In the present scenario, the power of the state has been given to Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing and the Myint Swe, the first vice-president of Myanmar, will be in-charge as the president of the country.

Alongside, a call has been taken to cease the telecommunications in the capital city of Myanmar, Naypyidaw and also for the nearby regions and states for a while. The recently appointed lower house of the Parliament was supposedly going to convene on Monday, which has been postponed.
