India initiates Covid-19 vaccines supply to Africa under Covax facility

India on Tuesday had initiated the Covid-19 vaccines supply to Africa with ‘Made in India’ vaccines to Africa, which comes under the Covax facility.

Anurag Srivastava, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson said, “Fulfilling our commitment to help the world with Covid-19 vaccines, supplies of Made in India vaccine commence today for Africa under Covax facility.”

Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access, commonly known as Covax, is an international initiative working towards equitable access of Covid-19 which is being headed by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations along with others.

Earlier, in January, the MEA declared that India is working towards supplying 1 crore or 10 million vaccine doses to Africa and 10 lakh will be alloted for he United Nations Health workers under GAVI’s Covax facility.

The loading of the very first shipment over a truck at Pune’s Serum Institute of India was posted by WHO South-East Asia. The tweet was, “The first batch of Covid-19 vaccines for #COVAX rolled out from @SerumInstIndia, in Pune, on Tuesday morning”

As of now, India has supplied a total of 229.7 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccines to the various countries, as per the reports of MEA.
